Let's Get STEM-y!
Hey Girls...
STEM is an initiative that combines SCIENCE,TECHNOLOGY,ENGINEERING and MATH. We have been working on these types of activities throughout this school year. I would like for you to continue to explore STEM activities over the summer and I have a few suggested ideas to get you started.
-Attend a Lowe's Build & Grow Workshop and receive an apron and goggles
-Attend a Home Depot Kid's Workshop and receive an apron and pin
-Use a big appliance box to create your own playhouse, store, cave, or vehicle
-Use smaller boxes to create an architectural structure (stack, glue, tie, or tape them together)
-Create an outdoor habitat for your favorite animal
-Use pine cones, peanut butter, and bird seed to make a bird feeder
-Learn to play chess
-Make home-made playdough, silly putty, or bubbles
Have fun! Visit our Linkable page for more ideas and links!

16oz Water Bottles Needed
The second graders are in the middle of the kite-building project and are in need of EMPTY water bottles. These bottles will become our kite flying line holders. We would prefer 16oz. bottles, but can use the 8oz. also. If you have a few extra empty water bottles, please send them in and we'll find a use for them. Please have your water bottles at school by Tuesday, February 21st. We are looking forward to flying our kites in March!

Digital Citizenship
One of the most important discussions we can have with our children is about digital citizenship and online safety. Assistant U. S. Attorney Debra Ireland, part of Project Safe Childhood, will speak at a parent coffee hosted by the Lower School on Thursday, February 9th, from 7:35 - 8:35 a.m. She will discuss digital footprints, cyber bullying, online safety and more. Following her presentation, she will meet with 3rd and 4th grade students for an age appropriate discussion on digital citizenship. We hope you will join us for this important conversation.
This event is open to all parents and I would encourage you to attend if possible!

Sumdog
I have introduce yet another web site for fact practice to the girls. It is called Sumdog. It looks like it would be more motivating to the girls than some of the others. As they practice their facts and compete with other people, they can earn points to "buy" things for their avatar. They can purchase clothes, accessories, and fun items using points that they have earned. You just may have to remind them that the point is to practice their math. They will probably want to spend more time designing their avatar than working on their math facts! You can choose the skill to work on for each session such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, number patterns, etc. It might be a fun alternative during the week as you practice for the fact tests. I put a live link over on the right side of my blog. The girls know where it is and shouldn't have any problem getting to the site independently. Have fun!

Animal Reports
The girls have been asked to do some thinking and come up with three animals that they would like to research. She will only report on ONE, but I would like to have options so that we don't have a repeat of the same animal in our class. They should list them in order of preference. We will be working on a file folder report in class. More information will be coming home about that part soon. Animal choices should not include pets or farm animals. They should not choose animals that are very rare because information may be too difficult for them to find.
